Jamil Salmi is an international expert in the field of higher education and provides advisory services to Governments of some countries, universities, international and regional banks and agencies. Until January 2012, he held the position of coordinator for higher education at the World Bank. Jamil Salmi wrote the first political document of the World Bank on higher education in 1994 and also authored the strategy of the World Bank in the same field in 2002. The name of the strategy is “Building Knowledge Societies: New Challenges for Higher Education”. Over the past 20 years, Jamil Salmi has advised on political issues in the field of reform and strategic development of the higher education system, the leadership of universities and government managers from more than 80 countries.
Jamil Salmi is a member of the International observant committees of a number of universities in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He is also a member of the International Observant Network of the UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (The International Advisory Network of the UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education), the publishing committee of the Journal of Management and Policy in Higher Education (OECD Journal of Higher Education Management and Policy).
Between 2008 and 2011 Jamil Salmi presented the World Bank in Controlling Council under International Institute of Educational Planning.
In 2009, Jamil Salmi published the book “Challenge of Establishing World-Class Universities”. His latest book, which he published jointly with Professor Phil Altbach “The Road to Academic Excellence: The Making of World-Class Research Universities” was published in September 2011.
